Custom-Made Mouthguards Sunnybank

A custom-made mouthguard can be the best protection against sporting injuries

Whatever sport you participate in, a mouthguard will ensure your teeth are protected.

There are several types of mouthguards available, including those bought over the counter and those that are custom-made. Do not fall into the trap. A mouthguard bought in a chemist or sports store provides very little protection. Although these mouthguards can be moulded, they are usually poor fitting, particularly for children, and often do not extend far enough to protect the teeth from being knocked out.

A custom-made mouthguard however, fits over the teeth perfectly, effectively protecting the teeth from being broken or displaced following a blow to the mouth or jaw.

What is involved in getting a custom-made mouthguard?

  • Usually, the dentist will examine your mouth first to make sure that you do not require any other dental work that may affect the shape of your teeth and the fit of your future mouthguard.
  • Impressions of the upper and lower teeth will then be taken by the dentist.
  • If you like, you can choose the colour scheme of your mouthguard whether it be a favourite colour or even your team colours.
  • The mouthguard is then constructed using a stone model of your teeth and fabricated out of the most appropriate material depending on the nature of the activity.
  • Your mouthguard is usually ready to collect a week after your appointment and no follow up appointment is needed.

What types of sports require a mouthguard?

Mouthguards should be used for all sports where there is a risk of injury to the teeth including:

  • Rugby
  • Cricket
  • Soccer
  • Hockey
  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Baseball
  • Any form of martial art
  • BMX
  • Some types of gymnastics
  • White water kayaking and rafting
  • Rodeo events

Is it time to upgrade your mouthguard?

If you or your child are participating in any of the listed sports and are currently using a store-bought mouthguard or do not own a mouthguard, it is recommended that you invest in a custom-made mouthguard. This is the best first line of defence from sporting injury.
