Whether you have experienced partial or complete tooth loss, dentures can be an effective solution

Apart from the aesthetics of having a complete smile, there are a number of reasons why you should replace your missing teeth. Often, when permanent teeth are missing, other teeth in the mouth move in order to fill the gap. This can cause long term issues in your teeth and bite alignment and can affect the way you eat and speak.

While there are a range of options available to effectively treat tooth loss, such as dental implants, these options may not be available to certain individuals. Things like a person’s underlying bone structure, financial circumstances and possible failure of the dental implant could mean that an alternative treatment, like dentures, may be more appropriate.

Full and Partial Dentures

Dentures are designed to suit each individual mouth making them both comfortable and visually appealing. At Sunnybank Plaza Dental we offer both full and partial dentures depending on if you need to replace one or a few teeth, or all of your natural teeth.

The removable nature of the denture makes it easier to keep both the denture and gums clean. Dentures are also a highly cost-effective way of replacing lost teeth as it is usually not a complex process unlike dental implants.

What is the procedure like?

Before you receive any denture treatment, it is recommended that you have an extensive oral health maintenance check. This includes a full examination of the teeth, gums and soft tissues around your mouth. Radiographs will also be taken to ensure that all of the remaining teeth are healthy and strong enough to support your dentures.

Fabrication of the dentures will usually require a few appointments.

  • Firstly, impressions of the upper and lower teeth and gums are taken and sent to a dental technician for production.
  • Sometimes another set of impressions may be required using custom-made special trays that have been specifically designed to fit your teeth.
  • The technician may also require wax rims which your dentist will mould to the dimensions of your teeth and gums.
  • The dentist will then provide you with a set of dentures set in wax for you to try and decide if you are happy with the shape, colour, size and fit of your teeth. If satisfied, the dentures are sent back to the technician.
  • At your final appointment, the new dentures are fitted and any final adjustments are made. As the dentures have been custom-made for your mouth, they will improve both the function and aesthetics of your smile.
